At Birmingham, you can apply for an advertised PhD or propose your own research. An advertised PhD is typically part of an established research project and is usually funded by the University or another funding body.

Entry Requirements

• A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent, or a postgraduate Masters, in a relevant subject.
• If proposing your own research topic, a research proposal is required. The proposal should be a clear and concise summary of your research, including your main research questions and the methods you intend to use.

Fees and Scholarships

• Fees for 2026 entry: £5,181 (full-time) / £2,591 (part-time)
• A limited number of scholarships and studentships may be available to outstanding applicants.
