Program Overview


Clinical Oncology (Part-time) MSc

The Clinical Oncology MSc programme is designed for medical professionals with an interest in clinical, medical, surgical, and translational oncology. This part-time programme expands knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of oncology, taking advantage of the University of Birmingham's network of University Hospitals, which offer cutting-edge oncology treatments driven by innovative clinical trials, a multidisciplinary approach, and advanced molecular stratification techniques.


Course Overview

The programme provides a scientific understanding of cancer's cellular basis and how molecular pathology can aid in personalised cancer therapy and disease management. It enhances expertise in clinical oncology, allowing participants to elevate the standards of care at their workplace. The programme can be customised by selecting modules that match individual interests.


Course Structure

This course runs over two and a half years, part-time, with intakes in February and October. The exact content may change, but the programme includes:


  • Year 1: Four taught modules delivered in week-long blocks for ease of travel and freedom from competing work commitments.
  • Year 2 and 3: Continuation of the programme with a mix of taught modules and a research project.

Teaching Staff

The programme is taught by world-leading academics and researchers, including Dr Gianmarco Contino, Associate Professor of Cancer Genomic Medicine.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must hold a 2:1 Honours degree in medicine, radiography, pharmacy, or other relevant subjects. International students must demonstrate English proficiency, usually through IELTS or equivalent qualifications.


Fees and Scholarships

  • Part-time: £5,625 (per year) for Home students, £16,830 (per year) for International students.
  • Scholarships are available, including the Birmingham Masters Scholarships, which award £3,000 to over 300 students each year.

Applications are submitted online, with a deadline of 28 August 2026 for UK and non-visa requiring applicants. Early applications are encouraged.
