Program Overview
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy High Intensity PGDip
The Cognitive Behaviour Therapy High Intensity PGDip is a postgraduate diploma program designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills necessary to become proficient psychological therapists, specializing in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This course is specifically designed to train therapists to work within the NHS Talking Therapies service, providing therapy to people experiencing problems with anxiety and depression.
Course Overview
Applications for this program will open in January 2026. The course will run over 12 months in a full-time mode, with two days each week in University and the remaining three days on a clinical placement within an NHS or NHS-commissioned Talking Therapies service. The program focuses on helping students gain the necessary knowledge and clinical skills to utilize evidence-based CBT interventions.
Course Structure
The course begins with an initial 15-day teaching block, delivered over three full weeks. Thereafter, teaching is delivered over two days each week, including placement days for the remainder of the three semesters. The PGDipCBT is a 120 credit degree, with three modules that run concurrently throughout the year: 'Principles and Practice of CBT', 'CBT for Depression', and 'CBT for Anxiety Disorders'. The final 'Practice Portfolio' module is not credit-bearing, although it must be passed in order to graduate.

Fees and Scholarships
Health Education England (HEE) and local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) offer the opportunity for NHS and NHS-commissioned services in the Midlands region to access High Intensity CBT training for their staff. This comprises payment of the course fees and payment of a salary at Band 6 of the NHS pay scale. A number of posts will be funded across the West Midlands region.
