Program Overview

Program Overview

The University of Birmingham offers a Postgraduate Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Difficulties, which is an online program designed to prepare practitioners to critically evaluate and develop evidence-based practices to support learners with dyslexia and other literacy difficulties.

Course Structure

  • The program is delivered online and runs for 12 months for the PGCert and 15 months for the PGCert AMBDA Enhanced.
  • The course consists of four compulsory modules, each worth 20 credits:
    • Intervention and Curriculum Management for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)/Dyslexia
    • Understanding Literacy Difficulties
    • Discussing Dyslexia
    • Identification and assessment of Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)/Dyslexia

Course Delivery

  • The course includes a range of recorded lectures, readings, and interactive activities.
  • Students are supported in tutor groups with other students who work in the same phase and with a tutor with specialist qualifications in dyslexia and professional experience with learners with dyslexia.
  • Online live classes provide opportunities to meet the teaching team, fellow students, and receive a step-by-step guide to working through materials.
  • Module group work and seminars offer live opportunities to discuss key topics, share learning, and reflect on workplace experiences.

Entry Requirements

  • A 2:1 undergraduate degree in a related field and professional access to learners with literacy difficulties.
  • At least two years of teaching experience in an educational environment.
  • Applicants must have been subject to the necessary checks in their jurisdiction for working with children.

Fees and Scholarships

  • The tuition fee for the program is £5,400 (part-time) for UK and Ireland students.
  • Fees can be paid in full or by instalments.
  • International students are required to pay a tuition fee deposit before an electronic Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) can be issued.

Application Process

  • The application deadline for UK and non-visa requiring applicants is August 28, 2026.
  • Applications should be submitted online, and supporting documents are required.
  • Early applications are encouraged, as the program may close once it is full.

Career Opportunities

  • The qualification allows graduates to apply for a range of careers in supporting learners with literacy difficulties and dyslexia, including working in schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Successful completion of the program can lead to Accredited Teacher Status (ATS) or Accredited Practitioner Status (APS), depending on the phase of learning and whether the graduate has Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Graduates can also apply for an Assessment Practicing Certificate from professional bodies such as the British Dyslexia Association (BDA), Dyslexia Guild, and Patoss, which allows them to assess for dyslexia in the UK and certain other jurisdictions.
