Program Overview

The Exercise and Sport Sciences MRes is a research-focused program that combines taught and research elements to equip students with the scientific understanding and practical skills to address key challenges in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation.


Course Structure

The program is structured across two academic terms, with students immediately beginning work on their research project in the first semester. A compulsory module in Research Methodology in Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation is also undertaken, along with optional modules in core exercise and sports sciences disciplines.

Course Delivery

The taught elements of the course are delivered in the form of optional modules in core disciplines within exercise and sports sciences. Extended research experience is offered in the shape of a six-month research project in the chosen discipline.

Teaching Methods

The course has a taught component and an extended period of research to produce a dissertation. The methods of delivery depend on the optional modules chosen, varying from lecture-based modules to self-managed modules.


Laboratory

There are ample opportunities for laboratory time as students propose a research project and conduct their research.

Research Projects

At Birmingham, students can apply for an advertised PhD or propose their own research. An advertised PhD is typically part of an established research project and is usually funded by the University or another funding body.


Find a Supervisor

If proposing own research, the first step is to find a supervisor. Students are encouraged to browse faculty member biographies to familiarize themselves with the research going on in their preferred areas.


Entry Requirements

  • 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant science subject
  • At least a 2:1 or equivalent in a relevant science subject (e.g., Sport and Exercise Sciences, BMedSci, Biochemistry, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Biology, Biological Sciences)

Research Proposal

If proposing own research topic, a research proposal is required. The proposal should be a clear and concise summary of the research, including main research questions and methods.

  • Funding options:
    • Apply for a PhD that already has funding attached
    • Self-fund, or search for funding or a studentship
  • A limited number of scholarships and studentships may be available to outstanding applicants.
