Program Overview

The Health Information and Health Informatics program is a 10-credit microcredential course offered by the University of Birmingham. This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to identify sources of health information, understand health information systems in the UK, and learn about the governance structure behind health information.

Course Structure

The course will cover the following topics:


  • Identifying sources of health information
  • Understanding health information systems in the UK and their integration
  • Learning the governance structure behind health information
  • The role of computerised decision support systems
  • Emerging information-related technologies in delivering healthcare

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:


  • Develop, collate, and appraise suitable health information data and systems to describe given health conditions
  • Understand and interpret current trends and future developments in population health data collection and storage
  • Critically analyse governance structures in handling health information-related data
  • Understand the principles of the role of computerised decision support tools in the management of health conditions at a population level

Assessment

The course will be assessed through one written assignment.

Application Process

Students can choose to study this course as either a microcredential or a non-credit CPD short course. The application deadline is:


  • A minimum of 6 weeks before the module start date for applicants eligible for Home fees
  • A minimum of 3 months before the module start date for applicants eligible for Overseas fees
