Course Structure
This course can be studied full-time, part-time, or for up to five years in a flexible learning pattern. International students can only study this course full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks, and students will study compulsory modules before choosing from a wide range of optional modules. A non-assessed introductory week at the beginning of the course introduces key concepts.
Term 1
Term one begins with a non-assessed Introductory Week, ensuring students have a firm grasp of key concepts in health and health research, as well as discovering the rich study environment at the University. Further core modules provide students with a detailed understanding of applied health research methods, including epidemiology, study designs, and analysis, developing and applying quantitative and critical evaluation skills.
Term 2 and 3
Students continue to develop their skills and knowledge in health research methods, with a focus on specialized areas such as qualitative research methods, clinical trials, and systematic reviews and evidence synthesis.
Module Information
The modular multidisciplinary program in Health Research Methods offers a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), and a Masters in Health Research Methods (180 credits). For the master's course, students complete the core modules (40 credits), a dissertation (60 credits), and a variety of optional modules (80 credits) to provide the total of 180 credits.

Entry Requirements
To gain a place at Birmingham, students will need to meet the general entry requirements, as well as those specific to the course. The application will be reviewed by the course's Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether the application should receive an offer.
- A 2:1 Honours degree or higher. Exemptions considered.
- Relevant work experience or compelling rationale for enrolling are considered for lower degrees and where degrees are not in life/biological/medical/health science.
- Applications also welcome from UK medical students who wish to intercalate.
English Language Requirements
If students are international, they will need to demonstrate they have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.
- IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band
- TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 Listening, 22 Speaking, and 21 in Writing
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills
- Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component
- LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 33 in each skill
Fees and Scholarships
The University tuition fee covers the cost of tuition, supervision, assessment, and includes membership to the Guild of Students.

Scholarships
To help students afford their studies, the University has put more than £33 million into student support and scholarships. The Birmingham Masters Scholarships award £3,000 to more than 300 students each year.
