Program Overview


Applied Linguistics MA

The Applied Linguistics MA program at the University of Birmingham offers students a solid foundation in linguistics and the freedom to explore their passions. This program is designed to develop expertise in areas of language study that interest students the most, preparing them for further academic research or professional roles involving linguistics.


Course Overview

The course provides a thorough knowledge of linguistics with the freedom to pursue individual interests. It is suitable for those who want to deepen their knowledge or explore new fields in applied linguistics. The program runs over 12 months full-time or 2 years part-time.


Course Structure

  • The course comprises 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation.
  • Modules run for one term, with each module involving a two-hour weekly seminar.
  • The program includes core and optional modules, allowing students to develop a thorough knowledge of linguistics while pursuing their interests.

  • Describing Language (20 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits)
  • Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (20 credits) Students should choose two of the following modules:
  • Discourse Culture and Intercultural Communication (20 credits)
  • Psychology of Language (20 credits)
  • Sociolinguistics (20 credits) Additionally, students can choose two modules from the following list:
  • Bilingualism and Multilingualism in the TESOL classroom (20 credits)
  • Business Discourse and Communication (20 credits)
  • Corpus Assisted Language Learning (20 credits)
  • Globalisation and Language Education (20 credits)
  • Language and New Media (20 credits)
  • Language, Power and Identity (20 credits)
  • Using Literature to Teach English Language (20 credits)

Entry Requirements

To gain a place at Birmingham, students will need to meet the general entry requirements, as well as those specific to the course. The application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor.


  • A 2:1 Honours degree in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, English Language, or another relevant subject.
  • Relevant professional experience can also be considered for entry.
  • International students will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.5 in any band.
  • TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 22 in Reading, 20 Listening, 22 Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 67 with no less than 67 in all four skills.
  • Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 176 in any component.
  • LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 33 in each skill.

Fees and Scholarships

  • The University tuition fee covers the cost of tuition, supervision, assessment, and includes membership to the Guild of Students.
  • Fees for 2026 entry:
    • £11,250 (full-time)
    • £5,625 (part-time)
  • The University offers a range of scholarships, including the Birmingham Masters Scholarships, which award £3,000 to more than 300 students each year.

Application Process

  • To apply for a postgraduate programme, students will need to submit their application and supporting documents online.
  • The application deadline for UK and non-visa requiring applicants is 28 August 2026.
  • International students undertaking a postgraduate taught degree are required to pay a tuition fee deposit before an electronic Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) can be issued.
