Program Overview
The Manipulative Physiotherapy MSc / PGDip program is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their clinical reasoning and expertise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. This course is ideal for those looking to elevate their clinical expertise, refine hands-on skills, and strengthen research capabilities and practice-based evaluation for a successful career in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
Course Structure
The program will run over 12 months in a full-time mode, with the option to undertake the program on a part-time basis. The course consists of a series of taught core and optional modules alongside a 60-credit research dissertation.
Autumn Term
The autumn term includes three modules:
- Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy – focuses on assessing and managing lower quadrant conditions, developing clinical reasoning, decision-making, and evidence-based practice with a hands-on approach.
- Innovation in Professional Development – highlights reflective practice, CPD, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Research Methodology in Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation.

Course Delivery
The course is delivered via several methods, including distance learning, two/three-day blocks of teaching, and more. Students will participate in a range of teaching styles, such as lectures, small group tutorials, presentations, peer group learning, self-study, and practical assignments.
Module Information
The degree comprises a series of taught core and optional modules alongside a 60-credit research dissertation. Students will take a total of 180 Masters level credits. The modules listed are an indication only and may be subject to change.

Students must select 20 credits of modules from options available, including:
- LM Sports Medicine Assessment (20 credits)
- LM Sports Medicine Rehabilitation (20 credits)
- Neuromuscular adaptation to training (20 credits)
- Work Based Continuing Professional Development (20 credits)
Teaching Staff
The program is taught by distinguished research and teaching staff, including:
- Paul Sealey, Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy, with a specialist interest in rotator cuff related shoulder pain.
Entry Requirements
To gain a place at Birmingham, applicants will need to meet the general entry requirements, as well as those specific to the course. Requirements include:
- A 2:1 Honours degree in an undergraduate (pre-registration) physiotherapy qualification
- Documented evidence of approximately 750 hours of post-registration manipulative/musculoskeletal physiotherapy skills and experience
- Registration as a practising physiotherapist in the country where they are currently/have been practising
English Language Requirements
International students will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.
Fees and Scholarships
Fees for the program are:
- £11,250 (full-time)
- £5,625 (part-time)
The University offers a range of scholarships, including the Birmingham Masters Scholarships, which award £3,000 to more than 300 students each year.
