Introduction to the Masters in Public Administration (MPA) Program

Course Structure

The program runs over 12 months in full-time mode, with the option to undertake it on a part-time basis over 24 months for Home students. The course is divided into three terms: First Term, Second Term, and Summer Term.


First Term

In the First Term, students study a foundational 20-credit module in applied research, focusing on evidence-based decision-making in public policy and management. They also learn how to communicate findings effectively to diverse stakeholders. Additionally, students can customize their curriculum with 60 credits from optional modules within the School of Government or the College of Social Sciences.

Module Information

The program is composed of three 20-credit core modules completed by three 20-credit modules from across the School of Government and College of Social Sciences. To graduate with the MPA, students must undertake a 60-credit dissertation.


Entry Requirements

To gain a place at Birmingham, students must meet the general entry requirements, as well as those specific to the course. The application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor. Additional requirements include:


  • 2:1 Honours Degree
  • Work experience or professional qualifications may be taken into account.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.

Fees and Scholarships

  • Full-time: £13,500
  • Part-time: £6,750 The University offers various scholarships, including the Birmingham Masters Scholarships, which award £3,000 to more than 300 students each year.
