Mathematics with a Year in Industry BSc

Overview

The BSc Mathematics with a Year in Industry program at the University of Birmingham offers students the opportunity to explore the beauty of mathematics and develop their skills with real workplace experience. This four-year full-time program combines theoretical maths with finance, statistics, and data science, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject and its many real-world applications.


Course Structure

The program consists of taught and optional modules, including a research skills project in Year 4 on a topic that interests the student. The course is assessed using a combination of exams, class tests, coursework, and research projects.


Year 1

In the first year, students acquire a comprehensive introduction to several foundational topics in mathematics, including:


  • Pure mathematics (foundations of calculus and linear algebra)
  • Probability (probability and statistics)
  • Applied mathematics (mechanics, mathematical modelling)

Year 2

In the second year, students take a combination of compulsory and optional modules, allowing them to specialise in areas that interest them.


Year 3

The third year is spent working within industry, providing students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge, develop key professional skills, and build their networks.


Year 4

Entry Requirements

To secure a place on the program, students must meet the general entry requirements as well as those specific to the course, including:


  • A Level: AAA to include A-level grade A in Mathematics or Further Mathematics
  • IB: 6,6,6 at Higher Level, including Mathematics, with a minimum of 32 points overall
  • BTEC: only considered when combined with other qualifications

Fees and Scholarships

The University tuition fee covers the cost of tuition, examination, and graduation, and includes membership of the Guild of Students. The fee for domestic (UK) students for 2026/27 is £9,535 per year. Scholarships, grants, and bursaries are available to help with the cost of studies.
