Program Overview


Microbiology and Infection PhD / MSc (Res)

The Microbiology and Infection PhD / MSc (Res) program at the University of Birmingham is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in research. The program is offered full-time or part-time and can be completed in a minimum of 36 months for full-time students and 72 months for part-time students.


Course Structure

The program consists of a research project, which is the main component of the degree. Students will work alongside leading researchers and develop the necessary skills to contribute to research of microorganisms, microbiomes, and infection.


  • Year One: Students will submit a progress review form and a project report based on the first year of research.
  • Year Two: Students will continue their research project and submit a progress review form.
  • Year Three: Students will complete their research project and submit a thesis.
