Program Overview

Environmental and Biological Nanoscience MRes

The Environmental and Biological Nanoscience MRes is a collaborative endeavour between the Environmental Health Science group in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences and the School of Biosciences. This research-focused course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of nanoscience and its potential environmental and human health-related risks.

Course Overview

The programme focuses on fundamental science, applications, synthesis, policy, and regulatory responses. It includes a large project carried out in state-of-the-art laboratories, providing students with hands-on experience in nanoscience research.

Course Structure

  • The programme comprises a research project and a taught component.
  • The research component includes a major project based on independent research, leading to a dissertation.
  • The taught component covers nanoscience fundamentals, nanomaterial synthesis, and environmental impact.

Course Highlights

  • Coverage of nanoscience and its implications
  • Focused teaching and learning modules
  • Experimental, field-based, or modelling research project
  • Ranked 17th in the UK for Environmental Sciences (QS World University Rankings 2025)
  • Ranked Top 150 in the World for Environmental Sciences (QS World University Rankings 2025)
  • Ranked 3rd in the UK for Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences (Research Excellence Framework 2021)

Course Delivery

  • A range of assessment methods will be used, including exams, extended literature searches, essays, oral presentations, and a written proposal.
  • The research project is assessed by a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words.
  • Tutorial, workshop, practical assignments, online on-demand classes, and online live classes are used for the taught component.

Taught Component

  • Environmental and Biological Nanoscience: Covers nanoscience fundamentals, nanomaterial synthesis, and environmental impact.
  • Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of (Nanomaterial) Toxicology: Explores toxicology principles, nanomaterial effects on biological systems, and disease consequences.
  • Research Methods: Teaches research methods through lectures and exercises, covering statistical analysis, hypothesis generation, and project management.

Research Projects

  • Students can apply for an advertised PhD or propose their own research topic.
  • Advertised PhDs are typically part of an established research project and are usually funded by the University or another funding body.
  • Self-funded research proposals are also accepted, with scholarships available.

Entry Requirements

  • 2:1 or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • Candidates should possess at least a second-class Honours degree awarded by an approved university or institution in an appropriate subject
  • A degree without Honours, awarded by an approved university or institution in an appropriate subject, followed by at least two years of appropriate postgraduate experience

Fees and Scholarships

  • £5,181 (full-time)
  • Funding options include applying for a PhD with attached funding, self-funding, or searching for funding or a studentship
  • A limited number of scholarships and studentships may be available to outstanding applicants

Application Process

  • Applications are accepted all year round, but deadlines apply for funding opportunities
  • A research proposal is required for self-funded applications, outlining the proposed research project, including main research questions and methods

Career Opportunities

  • The career opportunities available are expanding, with many clinical settings appointing individuals with a strong research profile
  • This MRes supports development in preparation for doctoral studies and is ideal for those interested in the health and environmental impacts of nanoparticles
  • Career routes include roles in fitness and leisure, governing bodies, teaching, exercise prescription, and testing
