Program Overview

The University of Birmingham offers a one-day course, "Pain and Research Conference," designed for those working in trusts, academia, or industry with an interest in pain and the latest research. This non-credit bearing course provides a platform for pain experts to share learning, experience, and the latest research and evidence.


Course Highlights

Course Delivery

The course will be run on Friday, 4th July, and includes the following topics:


  • Update on acute pain and the latest evidence on methods to reduce it.
  • Understanding the use of the latest virtual reality technology in the management of acute pain.
  • Update on the latest evidence on the management of analgesia for rib fracture pain.
  • Understanding the management of patients with known substance abuse in the acute pain setting.
  • Opioid de-escalation and stewardship.
  • The current findings of the ORIGIN trial, looking into the benefits of a novel nerve blocking technique to reduce post-operative and chronic pain post sternotomy.

Provisional Timetable

  • 09:00 - 09:10: Welcome and Introduction by Professor Fang Gao and Dr. Sarah Ranson.
  • 09:10 – 09:50: Known substance misuse and perioperative care by Dr. Alia Mednuik.
  • 09:50 - 10:30: Perioperative pathway by Dr. Emma Baird.
  • 10:30 – 11:10: Opioid stewardship and de-escalation.
  • 11:10 – 11:20: Refreshments.
  • 11:20 – 12:00: VR therapy by Ivan Phelan.
  • 12:00 – 12:40: ORIGIN study by Dr. Mario Cibelli.
  • 12:40 - 13:30: Lunch.
  • 13:30 – 14:10: Rib Fracture management by Prof. Anil Hormis.
  • 14:10 - 14:50: TBC by Dr. Muhammad Kashif Munir.
  • 14:50 - 15:00: Coffee.
  • 15:00 - 16:00: Poster presentations and Debate: ‘The use of machine models and AI in Pain Medicine’.
  • 16:00-16:30: The need for quality improvement projects and research, trainee involvement by Dr. Ismaa Aslam Pain-Train UK.
  • 16:30: Closing remarks & summary of the day by Professor Fang Gao and Dr. Sarah Ranson.
  • 16:30-18:00: Drinks and networking.

Entry Requirements

The course is designed for those working in trusts, academia, or industry with an interest in pain and the latest research. It is suitable for those with little experience in pain and for those who wish to expand their knowledge of key topics identified in pain and research.
