Introduction to the MPharm Pharmacy Program

The University of Birmingham offers a Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become a leader in modern healthcare. This four-year program combines hands-on experience in specialist labs and practice placements, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the science underpinning the use of medicines.


Course Overview

The MPharm Pharmacy program at the University of Birmingham is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Course Delivery

The program is delivered through a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, practicals, problem and enquiry-based learning, role-play with real actors, and bedside demonstrations. Students will have access to a comprehensive support system, including personal academic tutors, the Student Services Centre, and the Student Experience Team.


Assessment Methods

Assessments may include essays, group and individual presentations, lab work, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and formal exams. Students will receive feedback within four weeks to help them improve.

The program includes a mix of scheduled teaching, independent study, and placement hours, which vary by year:

Entry Requirements

To secure a place at Birmingham, students must meet the general entry requirements as well as those specific to the course. The typical offer is AAB to include Chemistry and at least one further science at A level from Biology, Mathematics, or Physics.


International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

A minimum of 32 points overall, including grades 6, 6, 5 at Higher Level, including Chemistry plus one from Biology, Physics, or Maths, plus three further subjects at Standard Level.


GCSE Requirements

Grade B/6 in Maths GCSE is also required. Maths grade C at AS level may be offered in lieu of the GCSE requirement where appropriate.


BTEC Qualifications

BTEC options are considered, but the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma will not be considered without A level Chemistry.


English Language Requirements

If students are international, they will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.


Fees and Scholarships

The University tuition fee covers the cost of tuition, examination, and graduation, and includes membership of the Guild of Students. The fee for domestic (UK) students for 2026/27 is £9,535 per year.


Undergraduate Loans

Undergraduate students from the UK can apply for student finance through the Student Loans Company. The support available is made up of a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan, which helps to cover living costs.

Application Process

Applications for the MPharm Pharmacy program are made online through UCAS. The standard application deadline is 14 January 2026 for September 2026 entry.


Pharmacy Interviews

In line with new education standards, the School of Pharmacy will be incorporating interviews as part of the admissions process to ensure students' values and behaviors align with those of the profession and the NHS Constitution for England.

Upon successful completion of the four-year course, students will need to undertake a professional one-year Foundation training year in a GPhC-approved practice setting, pass the GPhC's professional competency examination, and meet the fitness to practice requirements to register as a pharmacist.
