Physics and Astronomy PhD / MSc (Res)

The Physics and Astronomy PhD / MSc (Res) program at the University of Birmingham offers students the opportunity to work at the cutting-edge of physics research, alongside world-leading experts in one of the largest Physics departments in the UK.


Programme Structure

  • Year 1: Students work with their supervisors to define the structure of their project, start to review the scientific literature, and set out the scope of work that they will undertake.
  • Year 2: Students continue to develop their research project, with opportunities for skills training and presenting their research at international conferences and workshops.
  • Year 3: Students finalize their research project, with a focus on writing their thesis and preparing for their viva voce examination.
