Program Overview

Introduction to the Physics MSci Program

The Physics MSci program at the University of Birmingham offers students the opportunity to explore the laws that underpin the universe. From studying the quantum interactions of sub-atomic particles to the vast celestial bodies that make up the night sky, students will master advanced physics in a friendly and supportive environment.

Course Overview

The four-year full-time MSci program comprises taught and optional modules, each assessed in a variety of ways, including exams, class tests, problem sheets, lab assignments, and project reports. Students will gain experience with coding in Python and laboratory-based practicals.

Why Study Physics and Astronomy at Birmingham?

The University of Birmingham is highly regarded for its physics department, which is accredited by the Institute of Physics. The department is well-organized, well-run, and benefits from a dedicated set of academic staff. Physics is presented through well-planned degree programs, supported by a range of excellent facilities.

Course Structure

The program is divided into four years, with each year containing 120 credits of taught material and laboratory studies, delivered in modules that are typically worth 10 or 20 credits.

Year 1

In the first year, students will get an overview of core physics and maths principles, covering quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical physics, and an area of their choice. They will also gain experience with coding in Python and laboratory-based practicals.

Entry Requirements

To secure a place at Birmingham, students will need to meet the general entry requirements as well as those specific to the course. The typical offer is AAA/AAAA to include A-level Mathematics and Physics grades AA (or AA as part of the four A-level offer).

Fees and Scholarships

The University tuition fee covers the cost of tuition, examination, and graduation, and includes membership of the Guild of Students. The fee for domestic (UK) students for 2026/27 is £9,535 per year.

Career Opportunities

As a graduate in Physics, students' choice of career remains wide open. They may go on to apply their physics knowledge directly in a scientific environment or use transferable skills in different roles. Our Physics graduates are making an impact across a wide range of sectors, including Information Technology, Education Management, Management Consultancy, and Financial Services.

Related Courses

The University of Birmingham also offers related courses, including Physics (International Study) MSci, Physics with Data Science MSci, and Physics with Medical Physics MSci.
