Program Overview


Respiratory Medicine MSc / PGDip / PGCert

The Respiratory Medicine MSc / PGDip / PGCert program at the University of Birmingham is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of respiratory medicine, including its diagnosis, management, and the integration of public health, community, and secondary care in service delivery.


Course Overview

This program offers a unique opportunity for students to develop skills to thrive in an in-demand health sector while studying in cutting-edge facilities for precision medicine. The course structure includes three core modules, a dissertation, and a variety of optional modules, providing students with the flexibility to customize their learning experience and degree to suit their individual goals and interests.


Course Structure

  • Term 1: Introductory sessions on respiratory anatomy, physiology, and other basic sciences, followed by the first core module, Respiratory Medicine in the Community.
  • Term 2 and 3: Students will take additional core modules, including Respiratory Medicine in Secondary Care and Allergy, as well as optional modules.
  • Dissertation: Students will complete a dissertation on a topic related to respiratory medicine, with the option to choose from a list of provided topics.

Entry Requirements

To gain a place at Birmingham, students will need to meet the general entry requirements, as well as those specific to the course. The application will be reviewed by the course's Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether the application should receive an offer.


  • 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent professional qualification (e.g., nursing, physiotherapy, biomedical science, or medical degree)
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, or equivalent qualification

Fees and Scholarships

  • Home fees: £11,250 (full-time), £5,625 (part-time)
  • International fees: £32,580 (full-time)
  • Scholarships: The University of Birmingham offers a range of scholarships, including the Birmingham Masters Scholarship, which awards £3,000 to more than 300 students each year.
