Ophthalmology Residency
The comparative ophthalmology residency at the Cummings School provides veterinarians with training in medical and surgical ophthalmology for a variety of species. The ophthalmology department maintains a presence in both the small and large animal hospitals and also sees patients in conjunction with the ZCAM and wildlife services. Residents benefit from a robust caseload and a collaborative environment, including excellent support from the anesthesia, ECC, diagnostic imaging, and large animal internal medicine services. Research and scholarly activity is a priority, and residents are expected to produce at least one manuscript for publication during the course of the residency. A didactic program including surgery wet labs, pathology training, journal clubs, and other rounds is provided to enhance learning and prepare residents for the ABVO board examination. Extramural training activities include the annual ACVO conference, the ACVO Basic Sciences course, and the residents’ phacoemulsification training course when offered. Residents are also expected to participate in teaching activities with predoctoral students.
Residency positions are available during selected years based on service needs and faculty availability. Available positions will be posted on the ACVO website.
