Introduction to the MD/MPH Program
The MD/MPH program at Tufts University School of Medicine offers students the opportunity to earn both a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in four years. This dual degree program allows students to gain a population-based perspective on health issues, complementing their clinical understanding of individual patients.
Program Overview
The MD/MPH program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in both medicine and public health. The program is integrated into the regular MD track, allowing students to complete their MD requirements in the same sequence as their traditional MD colleagues. Students graduate from the program with a dual viewpoint on health issues and a breadth of knowledge and understanding that prepares them to fill unique and often influential roles in the healthcare system.
Requirements
To complete the MD/MPH program, students must:
- Complete the core courses of the MPH program
- Complete a set of concentration courses
- Complete enough electives to earn 42 semester hours of credit
- Complete a 200-hour field experience in the summer between the first and second years
- Complete an Integrative Learning Experience, the program's capstone experience, during their fourth year

The MD/MPH program includes a core curriculum that covers:
- Epidemiology and biostatistics
- Human behavior
- Environmental and occupational health
- Health services
- Research methods
- Healthcare budgeting and management Students also complete an Integrative Learning Experience and attend a monthly evening seminar, Integration of Public Health, which helps integrate their public health work and clinical studies.
Admission Criteria
Applicants to the MD/MPH program must:
- Apply to the School of Medicine in the same manner as all other applicants
- Submit a separate combined degree program application
- Meet the admission requirements for both the MD and MPH programs
Tuition Costs
The tuition rate for the MD/MPH program is $9,144 per year, with a flat rate of MPH tuition for each year. The current academic year's cost of attendance budget, including tuition, room and board, health insurance, books, and other expenses, is available from the Office of Financial Aid.

Physicians with an MPH degree can pursue careers in every specialty, with many going on to work in clinical medicine, public health, government, academia, community settings, clinical administration, and the private sector.
