Program Overview
The program aims to cultivate social transformation-type medical data scientists who can extract and solve medical and healthcare-related social and business challenges, and promote collaboration with diverse players across industries.
Background
In recent years, the life sciences and healthcare fields have seen a surge in the use of data science, driven by the proliferation of medical ICT and the advancement of analytical methods. However, the development of human resources specializing in data science has been lacking, resulting in a significant shortage of data scientists in these fields.
Purpose
The program seeks to develop and provide high-quality education programs to address the shortage of data scientists in the medical and healthcare fields. The goal is to contribute to the advancement of Japan's medical care and the strengthening of related industries.
Target Human Resources
The program aims to cultivate the following types of human resources:
- Medical researchers and healthcare professionals who can research and implement new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches using data science
- Pharmaceutical company researchers who can advance innovative new drug research
- Product developers and business developers who can develop and commercialize new healthcare solutions using data science
2024 Admission
The program is now accepting applications for the 6th term, which will start in June 2024.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a university degree.
Examples of Target Applicants
- Individuals working in life sciences and IT-related companies, or those planning to enter these fields
- Healthcare professionals (doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, etc.)
- Local government officials and regulatory agency personnel
- Graduate students
Number of Students to be Admitted
Up to 20 students will be admitted.
Lecture Schedule
The program will be conducted online, with some lectures held in a hybrid format at Kyoto University or other locations.
Duration
The program will run from June 2024 to December 2024 (6 months).
Completion Requirements
Students must complete at least 60 hours of coursework, including required and specialized courses, and pass each course evaluation.
Tuition Fees
- General applicants: 500,000 yen (excluding tax)
- University and government officials: free
- Graduate students: free

Application Procedure
Applicants must submit the required documents in PDF format through a Google Form. The deadline for application is May 1, 2024, at 17:00.
Selection and Notification
Applicants will be selected through a review process by the program committee. New applicants will be given priority. The results of the selection will be notified by email in early May 2024.
