Program Overview
The Optikerprogrammet is a three-year professional education program consisting of several courses with both theoretical and practical elements. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in optometry, including the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.

Feedback and Development of KI's Optikerprogram
The program and its courses are constantly being developed as part of KI's ongoing quality work. For information on what previous students have thought of their education, and how you can be involved in shaping the program, see the page "Programmets organisation och kursvärderingar" on the respective course web page.
Pedagogical Foundation
We believe that the best results are achieved when students take responsibility for their own knowledge development. We also think it is essential that students can demonstrate how to do something, not just describe it. All practical/clinical courses on the program follow the same pattern:
- Initial goal discussions - what are your and your course participants' goals, how does the teacher view the course goals.
- Teacher-led introduction to the subject, lectures/seminars/labs/CASE/PBL (adapted to the subject and teacher)
- Students are given time to study - preparation for the practical elements
- Students show each other how to do it - teach each other (with teacher support)
- Students practice and train practically (on each other, standardized patients, "real" patients)
- Clinical/practical examination with clear goals and assessment criteria
In general, it can be said about the Optikerprogrammet at Karolinska Institutet that:
- The teaching is patient-centered and based on important symptoms, diagnoses, and problems. Basic scientific subjects and clinical disciplines are clear and integrated.
- The professional role is in focus through early and extensive clinical training. Basic scientific knowledge and understanding are applied repeatedly, and exemplified in the clinical context.
- Throughout the program, there is a clear progression in learning with clear connections between level-based goals and the choice of teaching and examination forms.
- Objectives for knowledge, skills, and attitudes are achieved through the student's own research process - own activity, perseverance, critical examination, and an investigative approach. Problems and questions form the basis for learning, and there is time for reflection and feedback.
- The content of the education is based on scientific grounds and is led by scientifically anchored teachers. Current research is integrated into the teaching, and students are trained to seek and relate to evidence-based information and current research. The research connection is clarified through the degree project.
