Program Overview
The Sustainability Certificate is an interdisciplinary program that offers a comprehensive approach to sustainability, aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program is designed to foster important competencies in education for sustainable development, such as forward-thinking, systemic, and creative thinking.
Program Structure
The Sustainability Certificate consists of several elements:
- Kick-Off Workshop at the beginning of the semester (4 UE)
- Participation in a lecture series, such as the Lecture Series Science for Future or other existing ring lectures open to the certificate program
- 2 seminars on diverse sustainability topics, such as Sustainability Video Documentaries and Sustainability Innovation Lab (28 UE, 3 ECTS each)
- 2 day-long workshops from the faculties/UHH (each 8 UE)
- 3 networking meetings/excursions to get to know projects/organizations on site (each 4 UE)
- E-Portfolio documentation and reflection of learning experiences
Learning Goals
The Sustainability Certificate recognizes interdisciplinary and holistic skills in the field of sustainability, including:
- Awareness of different types of knowledge, concepts, definitions, terms, methodologies, and applications related to sustainability
- Identification, discussion, and critical evaluation of the interrelationship of systems (political, economic, social, technological, cultural), their key debates, and proposed solutions related to sustainability
- Resilience in the face of unfamiliar modes of reading and uncertainty of knowledge: analysis of different data sets, texts, and image forms
- Ability to find, understand, evaluate, and compile interdisciplinary research in a self-directed manner, and to think and act in interdisciplinary, cooperative, and future/action-oriented ways
- Ability to form and articulate own ideas/views/attitudes through the application of knowledge and reflection of experiences in different formats (orally, written, visually) to various audiences
Eligibility and Admission
The program is open to interested Bachelor's and Master's students from all fields. The number of places for students participating in the certificate program is limited and will be allocated by lottery in the event of high demand.
Program Duration and Schedule
The next cohort will be admitted in the summer semester of 2025, and participation will be possible starting from every semester thereafter. The required courses can be taken throughout the student's studies. To obtain the total of 6 ECTS in the two seminars, active participation and examination performances are required. After successfully completing the program, the certificate will be awarded in a ceremony.
Additional Information
The MIN-Sustainability Certificate is offered as an alternative for MIN students, focusing on specialization in sustainability within the MIN area. For current courses with a sustainability focus that can be credited towards the certificate program, apply the filter category to the courses in the CDL area.
