MA-Studiengang Historische Musikwissenschaft

Overview

The Master's program in Historical Musicology at the University of Hamburg offers a broad spectrum of courses, including lectures on general music history from antiquity to the present, as well as seminars in music historiography, music philology, music and cultural science, and musical analysis and hermeneutics.


Program Structure

The Master's program is divided into compulsory modules, an elective area, and the final phase (Master's examination).


  • The compulsory area includes five modules:
    • "Methods of Historical Musicology I"
    • "Methods of Historical Musicology II"
    • "Practice of Historical Musicology"
    • "General Music History"
    • "In-depth General Music History"
  • In the modules "General Music History" and "In-depth General Music History", lectures and exercises as well as seminars are attended in the following areas:
    • Middle Ages and Renaissance
    • Early modern period
    • Classical and Romantic periods
    • Modern and postmodern periods
  • The final module consists of the following examination performances:
    • Master's thesis
    • Oral examination
    • Colloquium (+ study achievement presentation)

The career prospects for graduates of the Master's program in Historical Musicology are diverse. They qualify for a scientific or science-related activity, as well as, with special aptitude, for the continuation of studies with a doctorate. Apart from the scientific career at the university or at private research institutions, musicologists have numerous exciting job opportunities in various fields, such as archives, libraries, museums, concert agencies, and the music industry; in the administrative area of cultural offices and departments, music theaters, and concert halls; as well as in the fields of cultural management, concert and music theater dramaturgy, journalism in radio, television, and print media, publishing and editing, and foundation work.


Admission Requirements

For the Master's program in Historical Musicology, the following special admission requirement applies: A first professionally qualifying degree in the Bachelor's program in Musicology or Historical Musicology or in a comparable program.

  • For the winter semester: May 1 to June 15
  • For the summer semester: December 1 to January 15

Language Requirements

No foreign language skills are required for admission to the MA program in Historical Musicology. German language skills are required for enrollment.
