Overview
The Ph.D. course in History, Criticism, and Conservation of Cultural Heritage addresses the theme of cultural heritage with multidisciplinary and innovative approaches capable of responding to the needs of knowledge, protection, and enhancement of the heritage.
Objectives
The objectives of the course are:
- to train scholars able to address historical, theoretical, methodological, and operational issues in the field of cultural heritage, an area where knowledge, protection, and enhancement of the heritage pose continuous challenges and the need for innovative research approaches;
- to produce high-quality scientific research with an interdisciplinary profile capable of responding to the needs of contemporary society in the field of Cultural Heritage;
- to train professional figures updated in the field of digital reconstruction of archaeological sites, works in museum contexts, and prepared in archeometric disciplines and those of architectural restoration, able to interact also with restorers and other professional figures operating for the protection of cultural heritage;
- to train researchers with adequate preparation to interact or operate in public and private entities that deal with the conservation, promotion, and enhancement of cultural heritage (from museums to archaeological parks, to superintendencies, to regions, etc.).
Research Themes
The research themes of the course are Cultural Heritage. More specifically, the topics addressed concern: archaeology; archeometry; maintenance and restoration of cultural heritage; art history; musicology; cinema, photography, and audiovisual productions; theater.
Training
For the training of Ph.D. students, the following are planned:
- compulsory courses during which themes and methodologies that involve the various disciplinary areas are addressed.
- seminar-type teaching intended to cover the wide range of disciplines involved (cycles of lessons organized and coordinated by school teachers, integrated by a significant presence of specialists), within which theoretical issues and methodological aspects are illustrated and discussed, correlated to concrete case studies; adequate space is also reserved for aspects of conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage.

Duration and Structure
The course lasts three years. During the three years, Ph.D. students are required to regularly attend the activities planned by the teaching staff (lessons, seminars, laboratories, visits, and study trips), according to a path elaborated in agreement with the tutor and approved by the teaching staff, which also includes a period of research activity abroad. At the end of each year, final checks are conducted, conceived as moments of comparison between the teaching staff and the Ph.D. students to direct and follow their projects.
Career Opportunities
At the end of the cycle, Ph.D. graduates will have acquired the competencies and scientific maturity necessary to access the following job opportunities:
- entry into the university career through grants, research fellowships, positions as researchers linked to European research funding initiatives (ERC, Marie Curie actions, etc.), and competitions for researchers of type A and B;
- employment in public entities (museums, superintendencies, archives, libraries, photo libraries, film libraries, theatrical entities, lyrical entities, municipalities, regions, etc.), with the roles provided for by the individual entities;
- researchers and/or scientific consultants in private structures operating in the cultural heritage sector (associations, companies, and cooperatives for the organization of excavations and for the setting up of exhibitions and museums and the promotion of cultural events);
- professionals in the field of publishing, scientific journalism, and in the enhancement and promotion of cultural heritage;
- Ph.D. graduates will have competencies to carry out professional consulting (expert opinions, consulting, reports, research in the field of cultural heritage).
