Program Overview
Introduction to the Master's Degree in Statistical Sciences
The Master's Degree in Statistical Sciences is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in statistical methodologies and applications. The program aims to train data scientists with a high profile, capable of extracting knowledge from data, managing complexity, and variability in real-world phenomena.
Program Structure
The Master's Degree in Statistical Sciences is a two-year program that requires the acquisition of 120 CFU (Crediti Formativi Universitari) to graduate and obtain the qualification of "dottore magistrale." The program is structured into:
- Tronco comune (common core) of 5 exams (45 CFU) that provide common methodological and applied knowledge
- At least 3 "major" exams (minimum of 27 CFU) selected from a range of subjects offered by the Department of Statistical Sciences, which consolidate the preparation in quantitative methodologies and data analysis tools
- 2/3 "minor" exams (maximum of 18 CFU) selected from a range of subjects where statistical tools are used, primarily offered by other departments of the university, which allow students to acquire secondary preparation in a subject different from data science and statistical sciences
- 1 elective course (9 CFU) that is coherent with the rest of the training
- 21 CFU of other training activities, including the Master's thesis and a training internship
Admission Criteria
To enroll in the Master's Degree in Statistical Sciences, students must:
- Pre-register and submit a pre-evaluation application that certifies the curricular requirements and personal preparation
- Enroll according to the modalities and deadlines set by the university
Program Specializations
The Council of the Course of Studies suggests some specialist study paths characterized by a set of choices for the 27 CFU of statistical subjects and for the 18 CFU of non-statistical subjects. The aim is to facilitate students in choosing coherent paths that guarantee organic training oriented towards specific application areas of statistics. The 5 proposed specialist paths are: Data Science, Biostatistics, Finance, Business, and Population and Society.
Additional Activities
In addition to courses and teaching activities, Master's students can take advantage of an intense program of "data scientist experiences": statistical laboratories with companies, residential camps, internships abroad, seminars to enhance soft skills, and English courses. All these activities are designed to enrich the training and personal profile of students and prepare them for the best entry into the world of work.
Scholarships
For deserving students, the Department promotes study prizes to support them in their academic path.
