Program Overview


Introduction to the Interior Design Undergraduate Major

The Interior Design major is a professional program offered through the College of Business at Oregon State University. This program is designed to provide students with a broad overview of design thinking and processes, preparing them for a career in interior design.


Program Requirements

The Interior Design major requires the completion of 180 credits, divided into two parts: the pre-design major and the professional design program. The pre-design major, usually taken in the first two years, must be completed before formal admission into the major. The professional design program, usually taken in the last two years, is restricted to students who have demonstrated an ability to achieve the high standards required for professional studies.


Pre-Design Program

The pre-design program requires the completion of 57 credits, including:


  • Pre-Design Core Classes (32 credits)
  • Art, Communications, Economics, Math, Statistics, and Writing (25 credits)
  • University General Education Requirements (24 credits)
  • Unrestricted Electives (32-35 credits)

Professional Design Program

The professional design program requires the completion of 64-67 credits, including:


  • Pro-School Design Core Classes (40 credits)
  • Design Option Courses (24-27 credits)
  • University General Education Requirements (24 credits)
  • Unrestricted Electives (32-35 credits)

Admission Criteria

To apply and be considered for admission to the professional design program, students must:


  • Be declared as a Pre-Design major
  • Have a minimum OSU cumulative GPA of 2.5, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all Pre-Design course work
  • Have completed and received a C or better in ALL courses within the Pre-Design major by the end of spring term before applying

Design Curriculum

The design core curriculum provides students with a broad overview of design thinking and processes. The curriculum includes courses in:

  • Option 1: Select one of the following options (24-27 credits)
