Program Overview

Program Overview

The BEd Honours in Language Education is a postgraduate program that offers a range of specialisms, each consisting of two optional modules. The specialisms offered may differ from one year to the next.

Curriculum

The program replaces Educational Theory, Research and Enquiry II with an additional programme-specific specialism. A number of specialisms are offered, and each consists of two optional modules.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor degree in Education, or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with an overall average of 65% or more.
  • For applicants with BEd degrees, additional criteria apply:
    • 65% or more in Education IV and Being a Teacher.
    • Foundation Phase: 65% or more in Childhood Studies.
    • Intermediate Phase: 65% or more in any 4th year compulsory modules.
    • Senior Phase/Further Education and Training Teaching: 65% or more in either two major courses or one major course and one sub-major.
  • Additional requirements may apply.

University Application Process

Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre. Once the application is complete, it will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. The selection process for programs with limited intake may only finalize at the end of the application cycle.

Selection Criteria

Meeting the entry requirements does not guarantee a place. Final selection is made subject to the availability of places, academic results, and other entry requirements where applicable.

Fees and Funding

The current average tuition fees are available, and the Fees site provides information about the payment of fees and closing dates for fees payments. The University's Postgraduate Funding portal is a database of scholarships, bursaries, and other funding opportunities available to postgraduate students. The National Research Foundation (NRF) offers a range of bursaries and fellowships to students pursuing postgraduate studies.
