Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to develop the following competencies:
- Clinical Knowledge and Competence: The qualifying candidate is competent in clinical and laboratory skills at the specialist level.
- Research Ability: The qualifying candidate shows expertise in research and the ability to evaluate, and implement research findings in the practice of the branch of specialisation.
- Attitudes and Values: The qualifying candidate shows ethical, compassionate and skilled ability to conduct all aspects of specialist practice.
- Teaching Role: The qualifying candidate has knowledge of the principles and practice of Haematology from the basic to advanced level and is able to train others in the specialty.
Entry Requirements
Requirements for admission to the program include:
- Registered as a medical practitioner with the Health Profession Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or a qualification from another university that would allow the candidate to register as a medical practitioner.
- Is a holder of a training post in one of the teaching hospitals attached to the Faculty of Health Senate and the HPCSA.
- Is the holder of a minimum of two years standing, of the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Medicine of this University or any other University.
- S/he accepts the condition that, whether as a Registrar or Supernumerary Registrar, s/he may be subject to a period of probation of a maximum of one year.
Course Application Process
A limited number of positions are available for Registrars. Admission is usually contingent on securing a registrar post. An MBChB/MBBCh degree is required for all disciplines, as well as registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice).
