Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a distinct profession with national standards for education, training, and clinical practice. Clinical mental health counselors are highly-skilled professionals who provide flexible, consumer-oriented therapy. They combine traditional psychotherapy with a practical, problem-solving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution.
School Counseling
School Counseling creates counselors that are certified/licensed educators, making them uniquely qualified to address all students academic, career, and social/emotional development needs. Students in this program learn skills such as designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success.

Admission Requirements
Students applying to the M.Ed. in Counselor Education must meet the following requirements:
- An undergraduate degree with a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of their coursework
- A current resume
- A statement of purpose
- 3 completed reference forms
- Interview with faculty

Courses in Counselor Education
Some of the key classes youll encounter as a Counselor Education major include:
Coun 601: Life Span Development
This introductory course is designed for students to develop an understanding of human growth and development over the life span. Emphasis on physiological, cognitive, social, emotional, personality, spiritual, and moral development, as well as legal, ethical, and diversity issues will be reviewed in relation to human growth and development.
Coun 608: Seminar: Issues and Ethics in Counseling
This course examines the ethical standards of professional counseling organizations and credentialing bodies, as well as the applications of ethical and legal considerations in professional counseling. Students will explore legal and ethical considerations specific to clinical mental health counseling and school counseling.
Coun 640: Career Counseling
This course examines career development theories and approaches, as well as the impact of career on the lives of individuals with whom they will be working. Students will learn to utilize career assessments and access career information for counseling clients.
