Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education - After Degree
Generalist Degree
The Bachelor of Education (Elementary) degree in the Faculty of Education prepares students to facilitate the learning of all children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 within our diverse and multicultural society.
Why Study This Program?
Teaching is a calling, and elementary education is a truly special career. The Elementary Education program includes a five-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) and a nine-week Advanced Professional Term (APT). This degree can be taken as a four-year program or as an after-degree. Upon completion of this program, students will earn a Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) and be recommended for teacher certification in Alberta.
Why Take the Elementary Education After-Degree Program?
This program is designed for students who already hold a university degree. The length of the after-degree will vary depending on how much of the previous university coursework is transferable. The after-degree can be taken at the University of Alberta, or at one of the partner universities through the Collaborative Off-Campus Program.

Program Requirements
Non-Direct Entry
This program does not allow admission directly from high school.
After-Degree Applicants - General Requirement:
All applicants must present the following:
- A three- or four-year degree from an accredited postsecondary institution
- An Admission GPA (AGPA) of at least 2.0, or equivalent, based on the most recent graded and transferable 24
- Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 30-2 are not necessary for admission to the Faculty of Education After Degree, although Mathematics 30-1 may be a prerequisite for some required courses
- Casper test requirement has been removed for the Fall 2026 admission cycle effective as of October 1, 2025
English Language Proficiency/Spoken English Requirement
Because the University wants students to succeed, the admissions policy ensures that all students, regardless of citizenship, have the language skills they need to understand, participate, and learn in classes. The primary language of instruction in classes, with the exception of those at the Faculté Saint-Jean, is English.
Indigenous Applicants
The University is committed to encouraging Indigenous students in their work towards a degree. Indigenous students have been under-represented in higher education in Canada, thus the policy is aimed at increasing opportunity, with the goal of the Aboriginal student population being representative of the public served.

Tuition and Fees
Tuition will be evaluated based on the specific courses registered in. A cost calculator is available to give an estimate based on full-time for the program selected, living arrangements, citizenship status, and more.
Scholarships and Financial Support
The Office of the Registrar administers over $52 million each year in scholarships, awards, and financial support for undergraduate students, as well as financial and loan advising. Additional scholarships are also available for specific faculties and programs.
