Doctor of Philosophy (Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation)
Introduction
The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Coaching, and Doctor of Philosophy. The areas available for study are:
- Adapted Physical Activity
- Coaching Studies and Sport Psychology
- Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine
- Neuroscience and Movement
- Physiology
- Recreation, Sport, and Tourism
- Sociocultural
Entrance Requirements
The Facultys minimum admission requirements for the doctoral program are a masters degree, or its academic equivalent, with a thesis in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, or another related degree, with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4.0 grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent).
Program Requirements
The PhD degree is a research degree; however, a number of specific courses may be required within the various areas of specialization. All courses must be approved by the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Emphasis is on research leading to the dissertation rather than on coursework. All PhD students will complete a required course in their second year of study.
PhD students are required to complete the Ethics and Academic Citizenship Requirement and the professional development requirement, which includes 8 hours of professional development activities and the Individual Development Plan.
Although there is no formal residency requirement, some courses, research, teaching, funding, or supervisors may require an in-person presence on a University of Alberta campus or other related site.
Length of Program
The time required to complete the program will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken. Normally, a minimum of three years is required to complete the program. The maximum time permitted is six years from the date of the first registration.

Scholarships and Financial Support
The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies administers over $29 million each year in scholarships, awards, and financial support for graduate students, as well as financial and loan advising. Additional scholarships are also available for specific faculties and programs.
