Program Overview

The Department of Medical Genetics offers the MSc in Medical Sciences (Medical Genetics) degree, either as part of a postgraduate training program for post-MD applicants or as an independent degree program for those proceeding from a BSc. The PhD degree is granted through the Medical Sciences program. Research may be carried out in a variety of medical genetics-related disciplines for which staff in the Department have active research programs.

Program Description

The general description for the MSc program is as presented for all MSc programs in Medical Sciences.

Program Core Competencies

The following are the program-specific requirements to satisfy the FoMDs Program Core Competencies:

1. Professional Development and Ethics: See GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement and GPS Professional Development Requirement.
2. Communication: Students are required to attend Department seminars. MSc students are required to give a Junior seminar. Students are all required to participate in Med Gen Research Day (NRD) on an annual basis and to present either an oral presentation or a poster.
3. Critical Reading/Thinking: Students must complete 3 units of graduate level coursework to develop competency in Critical Reading/Thinking or Background Knowledge. Students are required to complete one of the following list of approved courses: MDGEN 601, MDGEN 602 (1 credit for 3 times), and MDGEN 605. Students may be required to take further courses to enhance their critical thinking/reading or background knowledge for success in their program.
4. Background Knowledge: Students must complete 3 units of graduate level coursework to develop competency in Critical Reading/Thinking or Background Knowledge. Students are required to complete one of the following list of approved courses: MDGEN 601, MDGEN 602 (1 credit for 3 times), and MDGEN 605. Students may be required to take further courses to enhance their critical thinking/reading or background knowledge for success in their program.

Thesis

Registration in 900-level THES. Students are required to prepare and defend a thesis on a topic approved by their supervisor and supervisory committee.

Tuition and Fees

Financial assistance in the form of Graduate Research Assistant Fellowships from supervisor operating funds is normally available to students in good standing. Further information will be provided upon request. Students are encouraged to apply for studentships from external agencies. Students may also be eligible for awards from the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
