Program Overview


Introduction to the Summer Academy

The Summer Academy is a mandatory, tuition-free program designed for new students entering in the fall. This five-week program provides academic and social foundations prior to the start of their first year. Admission to SUNY Plattsburgh is contingent upon successful completion of Summer Academy.

The Summer Academy is an important key to academic success, serving to reinforce and develop skills that will help students navigate the world of higher education. The program expects 100% commitment from all Summer Academy participants.


Responsibilities

College education is the responsibility of the student, and participants are expected to use this opportunity to improve their own life and potentially the lives of their family and friends. Final admission to SUNY Plattsburgh is contingent upon the successful completion of the Summer Academy.


Program Details

  • Class Attendance: Classes, seminars, workshops, and other activities will begin at the posted time. Students who arrive late or miss classes will receive disciplinary action.
  • Tutorial Services: Individual and group study sessions are provided by instructors. Tutoring will be available at various times, and Summer Academy participants are expected to use this service on a regular basis.
  • Recreational & Social Activities: Opportunities to participate in social and recreational activities will be provided throughout the Summer Academy. These activities are designed to foster personal growth and development, provide fun and enjoyment, and expose students to the new community and region.
  • Summer Academy Checklist: Before the summer is over, students must register for fall classes, submit final high school and college transcripts, receive their college ID, apply for the meal plan, review financial aid awards, and apply for housing.

Rules and Regulations

Due to the rigorous nature of the Summer Academy, structure and organization are particularly important. Behavioral rules and expectations are in place for student safety and to ensure successful completion of Summer Academy.


Residence Hall Requirements

  • EOP Summer Academy participants are required to reside in their assigned dorm rooms for the duration of Summer Academy.
  • Room assignments are final, and students will be issued room and dorm access.
  • The Summer Academy residential staff will reside with student participants in the residence hall.
  • Summer Academy participants are expected to adhere to the requests of all college officials as it relates to behavior within the residence hall.

Quiet Hours

Quiet hours will be in effect in the residence hall after 9 p.m., SundayThursday, and after 11 p.m., FridaySaturday. Students who choose not to study at this time must be respectful of the rights of their fellow participants.


Checking Out of the Residence Hall

At the end of the Summer Academy, rooms should be left in the same condition in which they were found. Before leaving, students must remove all possessions and thoroughly clean the room.


Leaving Campus

Students may not bring a personal vehicle to campus for the Summer Academy. Students cannot depart the program for any period of time without approval from the EOP director.


Guests

Overnight guests of any kind are not permitted. All guests visiting during the program must be approved by the EOP director.


Student Code of Conduct

All Summer Academy participants will adhere to SUNY Plattsburghs Student Code of Conduct.


Zero Tolerance Behavioral Expectations

  • Any violent or abusive behavior directed toward any other person is strictly prohibited and will result in dismissal from the program.
  • Drug use of any kind is not permitted during the Summer Academy and will result in dismissal from the program.
  • Alcohol use/possession of any kind will not be permitted, even if the student is 21 years or older.
  • Weapons of any kind are not permitted in the residence hall or on the person.

Cost and Transportation

The program is free, and all supplies for classes, courses, housing, meals, weekend trips, etc. are included. Students are responsible for getting to and from Summer Academy on their own, and transportation will not be provided.
