Course Details

Ethical Concepts and Methods

Overview

An introduction to the key concepts and methods of contemporary ethics, aiming to provide a working knowledge of the basic concepts and approaches needed to engage in philosophical practical ethics.

Programme Details

The course will investigate the distinction between fact and value, introduce basic metaethical positions, and assess competing ethical frameworks.

• Short course fee: ｣2700.00
• Students enrolled on MSt in Practical Ethics: ｣2195.00

Teaching Methods

The course consists of an intensive teaching week in Oxford, including lectures, seminars, discussion groups, and student presentations, supported by a Virtual Learning Environment.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on a written assignment of up to 3,500 words.

Application

The module can only be taken as part of the MSt in Practical Ethics.

Selection Criteria

• Applicants are normally expected to have a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours.
• Relevant professional experience and/or other educational attainment may be considered in some circumstances.
• A good working knowledge of email, internet, word processing, and Windows applications is required.
• Evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University may be necessary for non-UK qualifications.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available at the Rewley House Residential Centre or other University colleges.

IT Requirements

Students must have access to a computer that meets the specified requirements.
