The university offers a wide range of programs for students, including undergraduate and postgraduate certificates, diplomas, and research degrees.

Undergraduate Programs

• Undergraduate Certificate in Archaeology: a two-year part-time course that introduces students to the discipline of archaeology.
• Certificate of Higher Education: a certificate that can be completed in various subjects, including archaeology.
• Diploma in Archaeology: a diploma that builds on the undergraduate certificate and provides further training in archaeology.
• Advanced Diploma in British Archaeology: a one-year part-time advanced diploma that consists of a taught module and a 10,000-word dissertation.

Postgraduate Programs

• Master of Studies (MSt) in Creative Writing, Diplomatic Studies, Historical Studies, and other subjects.
• Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Landscape Archaeology, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and other subjects.
• Research Degrees (DPhil) in Archaeology, Architectural History, and other subjects.

Program Details

Undergraduate Certificate in Archaeology

• Duration: 2 years part-time
• Format: In-person
• Start date: October 2025
• Course Director: Fay Stevens
• Course structure: 3 terms per year, with alternate weekly Tuesday evening classes and Saturday field trips, fieldwork, and workshops.
• Assessment: 5 assignments per year, a practical learning journal, and a two-hour written examination at the end of the first year.
• IT requirements: Students are expected to have some IT skills, access to a computer, and the internet.
• Teaching staff: The Course Director and tutors will teach specific topics and provide academic advice and support.

Admission Criteria

• No formal academic qualifications are required.
• Applicants will be invited to discuss their motivation, understanding of the time commitment, and preparedness for the level of study.
• A statement of 300 words outlining previous experience and reasons for wishing to enroll on the course is required.
• Proof of English language ability is required for non-native English speakers.

Fees

• Fees for 2025: Ł3,515 (Home, Islands, and Republic of Ireland students) or Ł6,625 (Overseas students).
• Fees will usually increase annually.

English Language Requirements

• Applicants are required to have the higher-level scores.

Pathways

• The Department for Continuing Education offers archaeology day and weekend courses, weekly learning programs, and summer schools.
• Students who complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Archaeology can progress to the Diploma in Archaeology or other undergraduate programs.
