Program Overview
Introduction to the Statistics and Machine Learning (EPSRC CDT) Program
The Statistics and Machine Learning (StatML) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) is a four-year DPhil research course that aims to train the next generation of researchers in statistics and machine learning. This program is co-hosted by the University of Oxford and Imperial College London.
About the Course
The StatML CDT is designed to provide students with training in both cutting-edge research methodologies and the development of business and transferable skills. The course will cover a range of topics, including modern statistical theory, statistical machine learning, causality, and Bayesian methods and computation.
Course Structure
The course is structured around two mini-projects in the first year, with the expectation that one of these projects may lead to the main research project. Students will also engage with taught courses, each lasting two weeks, and will have the opportunity to take optional courses throughout the four years of the course.
Research Areas
The StatML CDT offers a range of research areas, including:
- Theoretical to computational and applied aspects of statistics and machine learning
- Strong methodological/theoretical developments together with challenging real-world problems
- Co-supervised projects with industry partners
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the StatML CDT, applicants should have:
- A first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honors in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, engineering, or a closely related subject
- No Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT scores are required
- English language proficiency at the University's standard level
Degree-Level Qualifications
Applicants should hold or be predicted to achieve the following UK qualifications or their equivalent:
- A first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honors in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, engineering, or a closely related subject
English Language Proficiency
This course requires proficiency in English at the University's standard level. If the first language is not English, applicants may need to provide evidence that they meet this requirement.
Funding and Costs
The majority of applicants who are offered a place on this course will also be offered a fully-funded scholarship specific to this course, covering course fees for the duration of their course and a living stipend.
Annual Course Fees
The fees for this course are charged on an annual basis:
- Full-time study: Ł10,470 (Home), Ł34,700 (Overseas)
- Part-time study: Ł5,235 (Home), Ł17,350 (Overseas)
Living Costs
In addition to course fees, applicants will need to ensure that they have adequate funds to support their living costs for the duration of their course. The estimated living costs for a single, full-time student are between Ł1,405 and Ł2,105 per month.

Proposed Field and Title of Research Project
Applicants do not need to specify a full research project as part of their application, but it is helpful to provide one or more research areas of interest.

Applicants must register three referees, who should provide academic references that support their intellectual ability, academic achievement, motivation, and ability to work in a group.

Applicants should upload official transcripts that give detailed information of the individual grades received in their university-level qualifications to date.
Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement
The statement should be written in English and should specify the broad areas in which the applicant's research interests lie. It should describe their academic and career plans, motivation, and scientific interests.
