Course Details

Minoans and Mycenaeans

Overview

This course examines the rich archaeological record of the Minoan and Mycenaean world, exploring the social, political, and religious contexts that shaped these civilizations.

Programme Details

The course covers the diet and disease, eating and drinking habits, social and economic structures, trade and overseas contacts, domestic arrangements, funerary customs, worship, and bureaucracy of these cultures within ten units.

Textbooks

To participate in the course, students will need to have regular access to the Internet and purchase the following textbooks:

• Shelmerdine, C. W. (ed.), 2008 The Cambridge Companion to the Aegean Bronze Age , Cambridge University Press, Cambridge.

Certification

The course awards Credit Application Transfer Scheme (CATS) points. All students who pass their final assignment will be eligible for a digital Certificate of Completion.

Fees

The course fee is ｣415.00.

Tutor

The course tutor is Dr. Anna Simandiraki-Grimshaw, who is trained in Archaeology, Western History of Art, Classics, and Education, specializing in the Aegean Bronze Age.

Course Aims

The course aims to explore the culture of Bronze Age Greece, with a special focus on the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.

Teaching Methods

The course uses guided reading of texts, group discussions of particular issues, and questions to be answered in personal folders.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be expected to understand the general outline of the development of Minoan and Mycenaean culture and have gained skills in researching and assessing the context and importance of varying types of written, artistic, and archaeological evidence.

Assessment Methods

Students will be set two pieces of work for the course. The first piece, due halfway through the course, does not count towards the final outcome but will help prepare students for their assessed piece of work. The assessed work is marked pass or fail.

Level and Demands

The course is open to all and no prior knowledge is required. It is offered at FHEQ level 4 (i.e., first-year undergraduate level) and requires an expected total commitment of 100 study hours.

English Language Requirements

While the university does not insist on English language certification, students may be at a disadvantage if their language skills are not comparable to those listed on the university's website.

IT Requirements

The course is delivered online, and students must be familiar with using a computer for purposes such as sending email and searching the Internet. Regular access to the Internet and a computer meeting the recommended minimum specification is required.
