Course Details

Autobiographical Dickens

Overview

This course explores Charles Dickenss autobiographical novels, David Copperfield and Great Expectations, and their reflections of the authors childhood, upward mobility, and romantic hopes.

Programme Details

• Seminars: Participants are taught in small seminar groups of up to 10 students, and receive two one-on-one tutorials with their tutor.
• Programme Timetable: The daily timetable includes seminars, tea/coffee breaks, lunch, and afternoons for tutorials, individual study, or exploring Oxford.

• Certificate of Attendance: All participants who complete the course will receive a physical Certificate of Attendance.
• Digital Badge: Participants will also be issued with an official digital badge of attendance.
• Academic Credit: The course carries 10 CATS (Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme) points at FHEQ (Framework for Higher Education Qualification) Level 4.

Concessionary rates are available on a non-residential basis for those who qualify.

• Dr Sara Zadrozny: Tutor for Oxford University Lifelong Learning, with over ten years of teaching experience and publications on Victorian fiction.

Course Aims

• Provide a historical and literary overview of Charles Dickens and his work.
• Demonstrate the structure of the Bildungsroman and its purpose.
• Provide an overview of mid-Victorian society.

Learning Outcomes

• How the first-person narration affects reading.

• On-course assignment: 1,000 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation.
