MPhil in Medical Science (Medicine)

The MPhil in Medical Science (Medicine) is a research-based program that covers the entire spectrum of medical science, from basic biology to clinical therapies. The program is designed for science graduates, medical students, and clinically qualified doctors who wish to undertake scientific training.

Overview

The program introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge, with the main aims of:

• Giving students with relevant experience at a first-degree level the opportunity to carry out focused research in the discipline under close supervision
• Providing students with the opportunity to acquire or develop skills and expertise relevant to their research interests

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, students will have:

• A comprehensive understanding of techniques and a thorough knowledge of the literature applicable to their own research
• Demonstrated originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in their field
• Shown abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies
• Demonstrated some self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acted autonomously in the planning and implementation of research

Continuation to PhD

Continuation from MPhil to PhD is possible, although it is not automatic. All cases are judged on their own merits based on factors such as evidence of progress and research potential, a sound research proposal, the availability of a suitable supervisor and resources, and acceptance by the Head of Department and the Degree Committee.
