Introduction to the Art Education Program
The art education program at UMass Amherst is designed to transform a passion for art into a career as a teacher of the visual arts. This program prepares inventive, passionate, and collaborative art educators who inspire creativity in their students.
Program Overview
Through a combination of studio art, art history, and education courses, as well as field experiences, students undertake a critical examination of art education as they develop skills in teaching, visual arts, and research. The program is situated in the art department and has strong cooperative relationships with the College of Education and the history of art and architecture department.
Program Objectives
- Prepare students to teach art in public elementary and secondary schools
- Develop skills in teaching, visual arts, and research
- Foster a commitment to continuing their own creative and research efforts and their own learning in the visual arts
Degree Options
- Undergraduate: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education
- Graduate: Master of Arts in Art Education
Licensing
Both the undergraduate and graduate programs prepare students to apply for a teaching license in the state of Massachusetts.
