Program Overview


Introduction to the Accounting & Statistics BSc Program

The Accounting & Statistics BSc program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of accounting and statistics principles. Accounting is the process of collecting, measuring, analyzing, and communicating information to aid decision-making within businesses and other organizations. Statistics is concerned with the drawing of objective conclusions from investigations where outcomes are subject to uncertainty or variability.


Program Structure

The program is structured over four years, with the first two years focusing on foundational courses in economics, finance, financial accounting, management accounting, mathematics, and statistics. In the third and fourth years, students progress to Honours, taking a range of core and optional courses in accounting and statistics, including a dissertation supervised within the Adam Smith Business School.


Course Details

  • Year 1: Finance 1, Financial Accounting 1, Introduction to Management, Management Accounting 1: A Business Decision Emphasis, The Accountancy Profession, and additional courses for BAcc students such as Introductory Economics.
  • Year 2: Finance 2, Financial Accounting 2, Statistical Analysis and Methods, Management Accounting 2: Organisational Performance, Taxation, and Business Law for BAcc students.
  • Years 3 and 4: Students undertake a dissertation and choose from a variety of advanced courses including Accounting and Finance Dissertation, Advanced Financial Accounting, Advanced Theory and Practice of Taxation, Auditing, and more.

Entry Requirements

  • SQA Higher Entry Requirements: BBBB is the minimum requirement from S5 to be reviewed for an S6 offer. Offers are not guaranteed to applicants who meet the minimum from S5. Typically, offers will be made at AAAAA by the end of S6. B at Advanced Higher is equivalent to A at Higher. Additional requirements include Higher Mathematics and a Higher Science subject at AA (AB may be considered).
  • SQA Higher Adjusted Entry Requirements: MD20: BBBB (also other target groups), MD40: AABB, with additional requirements including Higher Mathematics and a Higher Science subject. Successful completion of Top-Up or one of the Summer Schools is also required.
  • A-Level Standard Entry Requirements: AAB BBB, with an additional requirement of A-Level Mathematics.
  • IB Standard Entry Requirements: 34 (6,5,5), with an additional requirement of HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches).

English Language Requirements

For applicants from non-English speaking countries, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. This includes:


  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 with no subtests under 6.0.
  • TOEFL: 90 overall with Reading 20; Listening 19; Speaking 19; Writing 21.
  • Pearsons PTE Academic: 59 with minimum 59 in all subtests.
  • Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): 176 overall, no subtest less than 169.
  • Oxford English Test: 7 overall with no subtest less than 6.
  • LanguageCert Academic SELT: 70 overall with no subtest less than 60.
  • Password Skills Plus: 6.5 overall with no subtest less than 6.0.
  • Trinity College Tests: Integrated Skills in English II & III & IV: ISEII Distinction with Distinction in all sub-tests.

Career Prospects

The financial sector, locally and throughout the UK, actively recruits graduates skilled in all aspects of statistics, and a significant number of Honours graduates find employment in the commercial sector, in insurance, accounting, finance, or banking. Recent graduates have been employed by companies such as PwC, Grant Thornton, Alexander Sloan, Cigna, Deloitte, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Credit Suisse.

How to Apply

Full-time students must apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). International students can also apply using The Common Application, but if applying to more than one UK university, it's recommended to use UCAS. Application deadlines are 15 October for Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, or Oxford/Cambridge, 14 January for all other UK applicants, and 30 June for international students.
