Program Overview


Introduction to the Dentistry Program

The University of Glasgow's Dentistry program is a 5-year degree that combines theoretical and practical training to prepare students for a career in dentistry. The program is located in the Glasgow Dental Hospital & School, which provides state-of-the-art facilities for patient care, student clinical practice, and education and research in dental and oral diseases and disorders.


Programme Structure

The program is divided into five years, each with a unique set of courses and clinical experiences.


Year 1

  • Introduction to aspects of clinical dentistry
  • Teaching of clinical medicine, patient management & health promotion, and biomedical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, and microbiology

Year 2

  • Introduction to the theory and practice of the subjects that form the clinical basis of dentistry: operative dentistry, prosthodontics, and periodontics
  • Learning about the treatment of dental caries in a simulated clinical setting
  • Further study of biomedical sciences, clinical medical sciences, and patient management & health promotion
  • Beginning the management and treatment of patients

Year 3

  • Expansion of skills in all aspects of restorative dentistry
  • Carrying out the first extraction and taking the first radiographs
  • Attendance at outreach placements in pediatric dentistry
  • Comprehensive head and neck anatomy course
  • Dentist's role in providing smoking and alcohol advice
  • Initial preparation for the provision of sedation
  • Self-directed work within various subject areas
  • Undertaking a period of elective study, which can include:
    • An audit project
    • An educational comparison
    • Involvement in ongoing research projects (quantitative or qualitative)
    • A healthcare project in a remote or low-income country

Year 4

  • Continued work in the Dental School and in the community
  • Development of clinical skills through exposure to patients in all dental disciplines
  • Teaching includes oral medicine, sedation, orthodontics, and further aspects of patient management & health promotion

Year 5

  • Spending half the time in the Dental School and half working in outreach centers based in Public Dental service locations
  • Allocation to one residential and one non-residential outreach center
  • Attendance at sessions in each of the following core units:
    • Restorative dentistry Crown and bridge
    • Minor oral surgery
    • Endodontics
    • Pediatric dentistry
    • Periodontics
    • Consultant clinics (1)
    • Consultant clinics (2)

  • SQA Higher entry requirements (by end of S6): AAAAB Higher + BB Advanced Higher (AAAAB S5 minimum for consideration)
  • Additional requirements: Higher Biology and Chemistry at grade A, Higher Maths or Physics and National 5 English at grade B, 3 subjects in S6 to include Advanced Higher Biology and Chemistry, UCAT (for more information), Interview
  • SQA Higher adjusted entry requirements* (by end of S6): AAABB Higher + B Advanced Higher (AABB S5 minimum for consideration to include Higher Biology/Human Biology and Higher Chemistry at grades A/B or B/A)

Career Prospects

The program prepares students for a career in dentistry, with most graduates becoming general dental practitioners. Other possible careers lie in the hospital service or the community dental service.

  • 16 October: if including Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, or also applying to Oxford or Cambridge

Is Deferred Entry Available?

For Dentistry, Nursing, and Veterinary Medicine programs, the university is unable to consider applications for deferred entry.


University Transfers

Dental Schools do not accept transfers of students from other schools. However, schools may consider transfers for students in unforeseen exceptional circumstances with approval of both the sending and receiving programs.
