Introduction to the Civil Engineering & Management MSc Program

The Masters in Civil Engineering & Management introduces students to contemporary business and management issues while increasing their depth of knowledge in their chosen civil engineering specialty.

Program Details

• Teaching Start: January or September
• Location: Glasgow, Gilmorehill campus
• Duration: 12 months full-time (MSc)
• The program is designed for graduate engineers looking to broaden their knowledge of management while also furthering their knowledge of civil engineering.

Why This Program

• The University of Glasgow has a long history of research in civil engineering, with the UK's first Chair of Civil Engineering established at the University in 1840.
• Civil Engineering at Glasgow is ranked 2nd in Scotland (Complete University Guide 2026).
• Students are taught jointly by staff from the School of Engineering and the Adam Smith Business School, benefiting from their combined resources and expertise and an industry-focused curriculum.
• The program offers an innovative approach, allowing students to gain firsthand experience of managing an engineering project through the integrated systems design project.

Program Structure

• There are two semesters of taught material and a summer session during which students work on an individual supervised project and write a dissertation on its outcomes.
• Students entering the program in January are restricted to civil engineering (excluding management) topics only.

Semester 1

• Students are based in the Adam Smith Business School, developing knowledge and skills in management principles and techniques.

  • Integrated Systems Design Project
  • Core Skills Class

Semester 2

• Students study engineering courses aimed at enhancing group working and project management capability while improving their depth of knowledge in chosen civil engineering subjects.
• Courses include:
  • Integrated Systems Design Project

• Students select a total of 4 courses from Lists A and B, with at least 1 from List A.

Project or Dissertation

• Students undertake an individual project or dissertation work in the summer period (MayAugust), applying and consolidating course material and enhancing their ability to do independent work.

Career Prospects

• Career opportunities include positions in civil and environmental engineering consultancies, engineering contractors, and both local and national public authorities.
• Graduates of this program have gone on to work for companies such as BMT Asia Pacific, Scottish Government, and VINCI.

• Tuition Fees:
  • Home & RUK: Ł15,156 (full-time)
  • International & EU: Ł34,470 (full-time)
• Deposit: International and EU applicants are required to pay a deposit of Ł2,000 when an offer is made.
• Additional Fees:
  • Fee for re-assessment of a dissertation (PGT program): Ł370
  • Submission of thesis after deadline lapsed: Ł350
  • Registration/exam only fee: Ł170

Entry Requirements

• Academic Requirements: 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in any Engineering discipline or Physical Sciences/Mathematics degree with at least 2 credit-bearing modules in Engineering Mathematics/Mathematics and Civil/Structural Engineering-related subjects.
• English Language Requirements:
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no subtest less than 6.0
  • TOEFL: 90 overall with no subtest less than Reading 20; Listening 19; Speaking 19; Writing 21
  • Pearsons PTE Academic: 65 overall with no subtest less than Reading 60; Listening 60; Speaking 65; Writing 60
  • Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): 176 overall with no subtest less than 169
