Introduction to the History Master of Arts Program
The History Master of Arts program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of history. The program is offered in three different formats: a combined BA/MA History program for current undergraduate students, a stand-alone MA program, and an integrated MA program for students pursuing a PhD.
Program Overview
The Department of History is committed to a tradition of academic excellence, with a large and distinguished faculty providing a notable diversity of historical fields for M.A. and Ph.D. students. Currently, more than 50 graduate students from across the United States and around the world are pursuing degrees within the department.
Program Formats
- A combined BA/MA History program for current OSU undergraduate students
- A stand-alone MA program
- An integrated MA program, wherein students accepted into our PhD program earn a History MA along the way to their PhD
Important Admission Note
Please note that if your ultimate degree objective at OSU is the PhD, you must utilize our PhD application rather than our MA application, even if you will be entering the program without an MA degree in hand.
Research and Academic Environment

Many students and faculty members also participate in the programs and activities of other departments and interdisciplinary centers.
