Introduction to the JD-MPH Joint Degree Program

The JD-MPH program, a collaborative effort between Pitt Public Health and Pitt's School of Law, offers students a comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates law, health policy, and management. This unique program prepares students to address the complex legalities, issues, and problems affecting personal and public health.

Program Overview

The JD-MPH program provides students with a cluster of opportunities to encourage and support their professional and leadership development, both within and outside the classroom. This includes activities within the course Health Systems, Leadership and Professional Development, which is required for MPH and MHA students.

Professional Development Opportunities

• The Public Health Leader-in-Residence (PHLIR) program enhances students' contact with and knowledge about the world of practice, serving as a valuable resource for professional and career development.
• A competency self-assessment process allows students to evaluate their skills and set goals for improvement.
• The supervised practicum experience provides hands-on training and application of theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.

Career Services and Support

• The school's office of career services offers a schedule of professional development services, including:
  • Resume preparation
  • Employment interviewing
  • Interpersonal and social skills development
• These services are designed to support students in their career pursuits and prepare them for the professional landscape.

Student Governance and Organizations

• MPH students are encouraged to participate in student governance by becoming active in the HPMA student organization.
• Opportunities for involvement in standing committees at the department, school, or University level, as well as service activities in the broader community, are also available.

• Graduates of the JD-MPH program are well-positioned for employment opportunities in:

  • Public health agency management
  • Foundation and related nonprofit organization management positions, both nationally and globally
• They are also competitive for positions as policy analysts at the federal, state, and local governmental levels, and for some post-graduate administrative fellowships in healthcare systems.
• To supplement their academic credentials, students are encouraged to sit for the CPH certification exam.
