Program Overview

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is a nationally recognized course that provides formal qualifications for individuals working in a work health and safety (WHS) role. This qualification applies to individuals who provide a broad range of technical knowledge and skills, and have some limited responsibility for the output of others.


Career Opportunities

Students may work in the role of a Work Health and Safety Officer or Work Health and Safety Advisor.


Structure and Availability

The course is typically completed over a 12-month period, with students allocating approximately 12-15 hours per week of study. The course is competency-based, and it may be possible for learners to complete their training sooner if they have reached the required skill level.


Course Structure

The course consists of 10 units, which are divided into three clusters:


  • Cluster 1: Foundations of Work Health and Safety
    • BSBWHS412: Assist with workplace compliance with WHS laws
    • BSBWHS414: Contribute to WHS risk management
    • BSBWHS415: Contribute to implementing WHS management systems
  • Cluster 2: Introduction to further key elements of Work Health and Safety
    • BSBWHS413: Contribute to implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes
    • BSBWHS416: Contribute to workplace incident response
    • BSBWHS418: Assist with managing WHS compliance of contractors
  • Cluster 3: Managing contingencies, hazardous processes, and procedures in Work Health and Safety
    • BSBWHS417: Assist with managing WHS implications of return to work
    • BSBWHS431: Develop processes and procedures for controlling hazardous chemicals in the workplace
    • BSBWHS520: Manage implementation of emergency procedures
    • BSBWRT411: Write complex documents

Requirements

Entry requirements include completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher-level course. There are no other entry requirements specified.


Fees and Scholarships

The fee for service is $3,320, with a fee for service per unit of $332. The RPL fee for service per unit is $249. Scholarships are available, and students can apply for recognition of prior learning.
