Introduction to the MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways

The MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways is designed to provide essential pre-employment training, enhancing prospects for securing apprenticeships or traineeships within the engineering sector. This qualification covers competencies for work entry programs, providing grounding in safety and basic skills and knowledge for work in any engineering discipline.


Overview of the Course

This course is part of the Start TAFE Now (STN) program and is intended for simulated work environments, making it suitable for delivery to school students. The focus is on using engineering tools and equipment to produce or modify objects, developing trade-like skills but not intended to develop trade-level skills.


Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, graduates may pursue career opportunities in apprenticeships in engineering fields, including boilermaker, sheet metal worker, fitter, fitter and turner, welder, mechanical machinist, factory worker, or metal production assistant.


Structure and Availability

The course structure includes core and elective units, with the core units covering environmentally sustainable work practices, career planning, safety in manufacturing and engineering, and undertaking a basic engineering project. Elective units include manual handling, use of hand tools, organizing and communicating information, and pulling apart and re-assembling engineering mechanisms.

Requirements

Entry requirements include completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the applicant has completed an equal or higher-level course. Start TAFE Now students must be in Year 11 or Year 12.


Fees and Scholarships

Course tuition fees are subject to change and are reviewed annually. Apprenticeship and traineeship subsidy eligibility is not assessed in the eligibility calculator. Subsidies reduce the cost of tuition fees for TAFE courses, and eligibility and conditions apply.


  • Fee for Service/Full Fee: When the full tuition fee is charged to students.
  • Co-Contribution and Co-Contribution Concessional Fee: Some government-funded training programs require students to contribute to the cost of their education through a co-contribution fee.
  • VET in Schools (VETiS) Funding: As a high school student, applicants may be eligible for the Queensland Governments VET in Schools (VETiS) program, which is fee-free.
  • Scholarships: CQUniversity offers scholarships, bursaries, and stipends to help with study and living expenses.

To apply, check the course requirements, get a Unique Student Identifier, supply the Start TAFE Now Application Documents, submit the application, and complete the bksb testing. The last day to apply is Monday, 19 January 2026.
