The Certificate II in Salon Assistant is a preparatory qualification that provides a defined and limited range of basic skills and knowledge used in hairdressing salons. This course is designed for individuals who want to pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry.

Course Structure

The course is typically delivered over a 26-33 week period for mainstream full-time students and 44-52 weeks for Start TAFE Now (STN) students. The course structure includes:


  • Core units:
    • SHBXIND002: Communicate as part of a salon team
    • SHBXIND001: Comply with organisational requirements within a personal services environment
    • SHBXCCS003: Greet and prepare clients for salon services
    • SHBXCCS001: Conduct salon financial transactions
    • SHBHIND001: Maintain and organise tools, equipment and work areas
    • SHBHDES001: Dry hair to shape
    • SHBHBAS001: Provide shampoo and basin services
    • BSBWHS201: Contribute to health and safety of self and others
  • Elective units:
    • SIRRINV001: Receive and handle retail stock
    • SHBHDES002: Braid hair
    • SHBHCLS001: Apply hair colour products
    • SHBHBAS002: Provide head, neck and shoulder massages for relaxation

Requirements

Students are required to complete the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy assessment prior to enrolment unless they have completed an equal or higher-level course.
