Animation and Visual Effects Program

The Animation and Visual Effects program at Montclair State University is designed for students who want to develop immersive experiences and create digital worlds. This program utilizes state-of-the-art facilities and provides students with the opportunity to hone their skills in 2D and 3D animation, game development, immersive storytelling, and visual effects.

Program Details

The program is designed to help students harness their talent and creativity and turn it into jaw-dropping animation and eye-popping effects. Students will have access to the bright lights of New York and some of the biggest companies in the world, sitting just 12 miles away.


Additional Admissions Requirements

To apply to the Animation and Visual Effects program, students must submit a portfolio containing:


  • A cover letter (1-page maximum) stating their interest in studying animation and visual effects and including their future professional aspirations
  • 15-20 images of their strongest artwork, which should demonstrate originality, consistency, presentation, drawing skills, computer skills, composition and design, use of color, ability to communicate concepts, quality of sketchbook, and enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing this field
  • Images should be clearly labeled, oriented correctly, and professionally presented within the application
  • Each submitted portfolio artwork should be labeled with:
    • Title of artwork
    • Year the artwork was created
    • Involvement in the project (if collaborative)
    • Medium produced in (traditional, digital, hybrid, other) and software used (if applicable)
  • An observational drawing (digital or traditional artwork) that demonstrates the ability to identify lines, curves, edges, perspective, proportion, hues, and values and translate them into drawings
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the student's work and interests, with at least one reference from a teacher
